Dental Crowns to Protect and Strengthen Teeth

A dental crown may be recommended when a tooth is cracked, heavily filled, weakened, broken, or has had root canal treatment. Crowns are designed to cover and protect the tooth while restoring function and appearance. At Lakeside Smiles, we use natural-looking materials that blend seamlessly with your smile.

Dr. Romy Pabla takes time to explain every step of the crown process before starting, ensuring you feel informed and comfortable throughout. Her precision and care mean crowns that fit well, look natural, and last.

When Is a Crown Needed?

  • A tooth with a large cavity that can't be restored with a filling alone
  • A cracked or fractured tooth that needs protection from further damage
  • A tooth that has had a root canal treatment (which weakens the tooth)
  • A severely worn-down tooth from grinding (bruxism)
  • A broken tooth where a large portion is missing
  • To cover a dental implant
  • To improve the appearance of a badly discoloured or misshapen tooth

Types of Crowns We Offer

What to Expect During Crown Treatment

1

Consultation & Exam

Dr. Pabla examines the tooth, takes X-rays, and confirms a crown is the right treatment. She'll discuss the type of crown and answer all your questions.

2

Tooth Preparation

The tooth is shaped to accommodate the crown. Local anaesthetic ensures you're comfortable. An impression is taken and sent to a dental lab.

3

Temporary Crown

A temporary crown is placed to protect your tooth while your permanent crown is being made โ€” usually 2โ€“3 weeks.

4

Permanent Crown Placement

Your custom crown arrives from the lab. Dr. Pabla checks the fit, colour, and bite before permanently cementing it in place.

Does CDCP Cover Dental Crowns?

The Canadian Dental Care Plan covers crowns in certain circumstances for eligible patients โ€” typically when the tooth cannot be restored with a filling and the crown is medically necessary. Lakeside Smiles is a CDCP Friendly Practice and we'll help you understand your coverage before treatment begins.

A filling may be enough when the damaged area is small to moderate. A crown may be recommended when a tooth has a large filling, crack, fracture, root canal treatment, or not enough healthy tooth structure remaining to support a filling. Dr. Pabla will recommend the right option after examining your tooth. See our Dental Fillings Barrie page for more.

With good oral hygiene and regular checkups, dental crowns typically last 10โ€“15 years or longer. Zirconia and porcelain-fused-to-metal crowns are particularly durable.

The preparation appointment uses local anaesthetic, so you should feel comfortable throughout. Some sensitivity afterward is normal and usually resolves within a few days.

Yes โ€” once the permanent crown is placed and fully set, you can eat normally. We recommend avoiding very hard or sticky foods to extend the life of your crown.

Dr. Pabla specializes in anxious patients. Visit our dental anxiety page and let us know when you book โ€” we'll plan your appointments around your comfort.
