How Often Should You Get a Dental Cleaning?

The honest answer — and why it's different for everyone.

You've probably heard "every 6 months" your whole life. And for most people, that's right. But the truth is that the ideal cleaning frequency depends on your individual oral health, risk factors, and lifestyle. Here's how to figure out what's right for you.

The Standard Recommendation: Every 6 Months

For healthy adults with good oral hygiene habits and no significant history of gum disease or cavities, a professional cleaning and checkup every 6 months is the standard recommendation from dental associations in Canada and around the world.

Why twice a year? Because even the most diligent brushing and flossing leaves behind some plaque — particularly in hard-to-reach areas like the back molars, between teeth, and along the gumline. Over time, that plaque hardens into tartar (also called calculus), which can only be removed with professional tools. Left in place, tartar leads to cavities and gum disease.

A 6-month schedule also means your dentist catches problems early — when they're small, simple, and inexpensive to treat — before they become large, painful, and costly.

Who Might Need More Frequent Cleanings?

Some patients benefit from cleanings every 3 or 4 months rather than every 6. Dr. Pabla may recommend a more frequent schedule if you have:

  • Gum disease (periodontitis or gingivitis): Once gum disease is established, more frequent cleanings are essential to keep it under control and prevent bone loss
  • A history of frequent cavities: Some mouths are simply more cavity-prone due to genetics, diet, or saliva composition
  • Diabetes: Diabetes and gum disease have a strong two-way relationship — gum disease can worsen blood sugar control, and high blood sugar increases infection risk in the mouth
  • Smoking or tobacco use: Tobacco significantly increases the risk of gum disease, oral cancer, and tartar buildup
  • Pregnancy: Hormonal changes during pregnancy increase susceptibility to gum inflammation ("pregnancy gingivitis")
  • Dry mouth (xerostomia): Saliva protects teeth from decay. Without enough of it, cavities develop faster
  • Braces or orthodontic appliances: These create more places for plaque to hide
  • A weakened immune system: Various medical conditions and medications can affect oral health

Who Might Be Fine with Yearly Cleanings?

A small number of patients — typically those with excellent home care, low cavity risk, no history of gum disease, and clean dental records over many years — may be able to stretch to annual cleanings. However, this is the exception rather than the rule, and it should only be done based on a dentist's specific recommendation after examining your individual situation.

What About Children?

For most children, the 6-month recommendation applies as well. Children who are cavity-prone — which includes many kids, particularly those who drink juice or sweet drinks, snack frequently, or are still developing their brushing technique — may benefit from more frequent visits and preventive treatments like fluoride applications and sealants.

Starting dental visits early, ideally around the first birthday, helps establish good habits and gives Dr. Pabla a chance to monitor development closely. Learn more on our Children's Dentist Barrie page.

What Happens During a Dental Cleaning?

A professional cleaning — formally called prophylaxis — involves more than just polishing. Here's what a typical cleaning at Lakeside Smiles will include:

1

Physical Examination

Before cleaning, your hygienist will do a quick visual assessment of your teeth and gums to note any areas of concern to bring to Dr. Pabla's attention.

2

Scaling

Using specialized instruments, your hygienist removes tartar and plaque buildup from all tooth surfaces — above and below the gumline.

3

Polishing

A gritty toothpaste and rotating brush remove surface stains and leave teeth feeling smooth and clean.

4

Flossing

Professional flossing reaches between teeth more thoroughly than home flossing and identifies areas that bleed or are tight.

5

Fluoride Treatment (if applicable)

Particularly for children and cavity-prone adults, a fluoride treatment may be applied to strengthen enamel.

6

Exam with Dr. Pabla

Dr. Pabla will review your X-rays, examine your teeth and gums, check for oral cancer signs, and discuss any concerns or treatment recommendations.

What If I Haven't Been in Years?

Life gets busy. Dental anxiety is real. Costs add up. Whatever the reason, if you haven't been to the dentist in a while, the most important thing is simply to come back — and we promise there will be zero judgment at Lakeside Smiles.

Your first visit back will likely be a bit more involved — there may be more tartar to remove, and we'll want to take X-rays to get a full picture of where things stand. But it's a fresh start, and Dr. Pabla will work with you to come up with a realistic plan to get your oral health back on track.

New patients are always welcome at Lakeside Smiles Dentistry, no matter how long it's been.

Frequently Asked Questions

They're usually done together but they're different things. A cleaning (prophylaxis) is performed by a dental hygienist and removes plaque and tartar. A checkup (examination) is done by Dr. Pabla and involves evaluating the health of your teeth, gums, bite, and jaw. Most appointments include both.

Yes — professional cleanings are among the preventive services covered under the Canadian Dental Care Plan for eligible patients. Learn more about CDCP coverage in Barrie.

Yes. Many dental problems — including cavities between teeth, early gum disease, and even oral cancer — have no obvious symptoms until they're advanced. Regular cleanings and exams catch these issues early when they're much easier and cheaper to treat.

For most patients, cleanings are comfortable. If you have sensitive gums or significant tartar buildup, there may be some minor discomfort. Dr. Pabla's team is trained to work gently, and we'll always adjust our approach based on your comfort level.
